Robert Welch was a keen young designer when he left the Royal College of Art in 1955 and started his own company. Since then, the brand he created has grown from strength to strength and produces high quality knives as well as other products.
The Robert Welch design ethos is to create products focused on their actual use, not to follow fashions or to create unnecessary components just to sell more things. As a result, their knives are typically elegant, well thought out and of a very high usability.
The Robert Welch Signature 6 Piece Knife Block Set with Sharpener contains:
- 8cm Vegetable knife
- 12cm Utility knife
- 14cm Kitchen knife
- 14cm Cook’s knife
- 23cm Carving knife
- 22cm Bread knife
- Built-in sharpening wheel
- Black knife block
The black storage block and the black handles of the knives with silver detail serve to create a thoroughly modern and sleek look on the work surface. The style is simultaneously eye-catching while blending in with the kitchen surroundings and this is a truly impressive feat.
This has got to be one of the best knife blocks I’ve come across in terms of ingenuity. It’s not just an extra showpiece that stores your knives in a nice fashion – it’s actually designed to be a highlight all by itself. The block comes with an in-built knife sharpening wheel which is very safe and easy to use and it also utilises magnets in the knife slots to keep the blades away from the inside of the block – preventing any damage. Genius, yes?
The knives themselves are from the Robert Welch Signature range and feature an exquisite curve that allows each knife to fit flawlessly into the palm of your hand. If it sounds like I’m already sold, I pretty much am. These knives are fully functional but the smooth, flowing design just adds something so much more and it’s all for a purpose. There’s no pointless aesthetics here.
For the confident and even adventurous every day cook, you should all the knives you need in this set and they are all built to last – we’re talking decades. With the in-built sharpener, you never have to put off giving a dulling blade a quick pick-me-up and the blades themselves do keep their sharpness well.
This set is absolutely ideal for those wanting to completely refresh their kitchen knife collection or as a perfect wedding present for a couple starting their own kitchen collection. They’ll instantly make you realise how beneficial it is, even to the casual cook, to have great quality knives.

Summary
I’m really struggling to find a fault with these knives as they’re just fantastic. While Wüsthof and Richardson Sheffield are kings of the professional knife ranges, Robert Welch have this amazing ability to produce the same quality knives that are suitable and attractive to the domestic cook.
This collection doesn’t feel like owning a professional set and as a result it doesn’t feel excessive for non-professionals. Yet it’s still a seriously high quality range and this 6-piece set has all the knives you’d reasonably want. I highly recommend this for everyone really – you just can’t go wrong here.
