Wüsthof is a solid company with an exceptional history in the knife industry and are still operating out of Germany as a family business. They always produce great products and are used worldwide by professional and amateurs alike. They have a distinctive European style and are very strong and sturdy tools.
This set is from Wüsthof’s Ikon range, which is a stunning range for the cook who really appreciate quality. It comes with a very distinctive knife block, which you’ll either love or you won’t.
The Wüsthof Classic Ikon 6 piece knife block set contains:
- 9cm Paring knife
- 14cm Sausage knife
- 20cm Bread knife
- 16cm Utility knife
- 20cm Cook’s knife
- 17cm Santoku
Let’s start of with talking about the look and design of this knife set as it’s pretty eye-catching in that elegant Wüsthof manner. The handles are a deep brown and made from hardwood and complete with the three rivets and a hygienically focuses join to stop dirt getting trapped. All this sounds good and is true as well.
The most notable part of the design is the height of the handle from the blade’s bottom. It’s higher than most knives and gives an ideal clearance between your hand and the chopping board. This is really useful for a great chopping experience and it goes to show that Wüsthof really pay attention to usability.
This set is mainly for those who absolutely love to cook, professional or amateur. The selection is excellent and you shouldn’t need any other knives save perhaps a carving knife if you’re a fan of roasts. The sausage knife has got to be a favourite of mine as it’s next to impossible to find a good knife for chorizo and this one is outstanding. I’d buy it for that alone.
The Santoku is also a really stand-out knife for stir fries and Asian dishes and it’s good to see such a nice example of this in a European collection. The paring knife is excellent and very sturdy; it’s ideal for precision work and definitely won’t let you down.
This range is expensive, but you will probably never have to replace them. Ever. They are brilliantly weighted, very resilient to wear and just work like a dream. They are a professional’s knife set and if you live in your kitchen, are a trainee or a professional – you won’t regret working with these.
The only thing that I could call a downside is the very distinctive knife block. The knives fit in beautifully but I find the block itself a bit on the ugly side. It’s up to the individual though.
