Richardson Sheffield V Sabatier 5 Piece Knife Block Set Review

June 2, 2015 By Kitchen Kit Out

Richardson Sheffield have more knife ranges that you can shake a stick at and each one has over a hundred years of expertise put into its development. The originally British company has never put a dent in its reputation or exceedingly high standards and they are a reliable choice for a knife set.

This Sabatier comes from the phenomenal V Sabatier range and is a scaled down version of the 9-piece set also on this site. While 9 pieces can be excessive for the everyday domestic chef, this 5-piece set may be exactly what you need. With its chrome-molybdenum-vanadium high carbon stainless steel construction and Rockwell hardness rating of HRC 55 – these knives are lifetime investments that just won’t let you down.

The V Sabatier 5-Piece Knife Block Set contains:

  • Paring knife
  • All-purpose knife
  • 15cm Cook’s knife
  • Carving knife
  • Bread knife
  • Wooden knife block

These five knives are legitimately Sabatiers and Amefa (parent company of Richardson Sheffield) are members of the Association to protect the Sabatier name. As a result, you can expect nothing less that immense quality with these. A 30 year guarantee is the icing on the cake in this set and its superior design, strength and materials will remain in your kitchen year in, year out.

The quality is immediately obvious with this set and each knife feels great to hold. They have a tangible weight to them and feature an ergonomic full tang, triple riveted handle for reliable, comfortable cutting. The blades are created out of chrome-molybdenum-vanadium carbon steel and the tapered ground blades give flawless precision with each cut. Very sharp, you need to take good care when handling these knives.

The All-purpose Knife is a real winner here and you’ll find yourself using it every day for so many foods. It’s a pure pleasure to use and remains incredibly sharp, even though it perhaps gets the most wear. The bread knife too will immediately make you wonder how you made lunch before as it cuts so easily and so smoothly without tearing the bread. Once you’ve used a set of Sabatiers, you’ll be hooked for life.

The wooden knife block is a really eye-catching design and differs in shape from the 9-piece set knife block. This one is elegant and tapered and gives the set that traditional look that should suit most kitchens. Dishwasher safe, this set will last every one of its 30 year guarantee without letting you down and its 5-piece size suits the family home.

The classic handles offer a reliable grip as well as a nicely weighted feel and you can tell that they’re strong without reading the finer details. With the five essential kitchen knives, you won’t find any piece here that is surplus to requirements as you may do with the 9-piece counterpart. The RRP is pretty high if you’re not looking to spend a lot but it can be found for significantly less and it really is a worthwhile investment.

Pros

  • Contains 5 essential knives
  • Fantastic quality, great weight
  • Attractive knife block

Cons

  • Not the cheapest

Conclusion

I’m a real fan of this set and it’s hard to find any flaws at all. It’s the perfect size for an ordinary home chef and has all the knives you’ll need day to day as well as a carving knife for those Sunday roasts. With the attractive tapered wooden block, it looks great on the counter and has really strong, riveted handles for that classic look and crucial durability.

All in all, this is a great investment and should easily last you for decades without compromising the integrity or quality of the cutting. They’re easy to clean and dishwasher safe so are generally a real pleasure to use. At a good price, you just can’t beat this set.
