ProCook Professional X50 Knife Set Review

May 10, 2015 By Kitchen Kit Out

ProCook Professional X50 Knife Set

ProCook is a consumer goods brand that sells cookware and bakeware through retailers and their website. They’ve been going since 1996 and have survived and grown well in the proceeding years. Their knife ranges tend to be aimed at the domestic cook although they do have professional ranges as well.

The ProCook Professional X50 Knife Set 8 Piece contains:

ProCook Professional X50 Knives

  • 9cm Paring knife
  • 13cm Utility knife
  • 16cm Chef’s knife
  • 16cm Santoku knife
  • 23cm Bread knife
  • 25cm Carving knife
  • 20cm Carving fork
  • 25cm Sharpening steel
  • Knife block

The 12-Piece version comes with the additions of:

  • 20cm Chef’s knife
  • 13cm Santoku knife
  • 16.5cm Vegetable knife
  • 16.5cm Cleaver

In contents, this 8-piece differs from the ProCook Gourmet 9-piece set with the lack of the cleaver but in quality, this set is actually quite different. The handles are more comfortable and sleeker, allowing for more prolonged use with ease and the blades feel stronger and more stable; much more like a professional knife.

The selection is a good one for the enthusiastic domestic cook and the trainee chef and they fit neatly into the knife block with the bizarre exception of the carving fork – which has no slot and thus must be stored separately. This seems like a strange omission but never mind.

The blades are constructed from a chromium-molybdenum-vanadium mix like most professional knives and they definitely give the impression of being very high quality. They all cut superbly and I’m especially keen on the fast chopping ability of the Santoku – a favourite knife type for sure.

The sharpening steel is a good addition and I’m a fan of knife blocks coming with one. It has its own slot and is fast and easy to use when the blades do need sharpening, which isn’t that often.

It’s hard to tell whether these knives would last for decades but I think it would be reasonable to assume so if they were well looked after. The quality of the steel is better than the Gourmet range from the same brand and with some love these shouldn’t need to be replaced for a very long time.

The price really is excellent for the quality and selection of knives here and ProCook are going up in my estimations. For the domestic chef, I think this set could have you happily experimenting in the kitchen for years to come.

Summary

ProCook Professional X50 Knife Set 8 PieceWhen it comes to the professional chef, they usually know what they like. Whether it’s the European solidity or the Japanese sleek power, every chef has their preference. It’s sort of hard to see where these fit in but for home cooks, trainee chefs or just those who appreciate high quality without spending a fortune, I’d be more than happy to recommend this set.

It should cover ever knife eventuality quite happily and should stay in use for decades to come if looked after well. As a gift for someone starting in their first home or someone looking to refresh their kitchen knife collection – this set will take them a long way.
