Global Knives 6 Piece 25th Anniversary Knife Block Set Review

February 22, 2014 By Kitchen Kit Out Leave a Comment

When Komin Yamada first began designing Global Kitchen Knives in 1985, he wasn’t going to do things by halves. With an enormous history of sword and knife making in Japan, he had a national reputation to uphold. He didn’t just create kitchen knives to do the job, he was tasked with creating new styles in the highest quality for professionals and households that were easy and effective to use.

The key to Global Kitchen Knives’ quality is an exclusive CROMOVA 18 Stainless Steel that offers excellent stain resistance and a strength that is second to none. Combined with this unique stainless steel is an acute angle of blade as opposed to the bevelled edge blades typical of European knives. With an acute angle, the blade will stay sharp for much longer.

The Global 6-Piece 25th Anniversary Knife Block Set includes:

  • G-55 18cm (7”) Cook’s Knife (RRP £125)
  • GS-61 16cm (6”) Bagel / Sandwich Knife (RRP £100)
  • GS-5 14cm (5.5”) Vegetable Chopper (RRP £100)
  • GSF-49 11cm (4”) Utility Knife (RRP £65)
  • GSF-15 8cm (3”) Peeling Knife (RRP £50)
  • Global Knife Block

This is a knife block set is aimed at those with a real passion for cooking and quality products. It’s not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but you can expect these knives to be in your kitchen for decades to come and still retain their strength and sharpness. For the ambitious domestic, trainee or professional chef, these knives are a pleasure to use.

This set comprises of knives taken from different Global ranges with each knife specifically chosen to form a highly practical collection. The 8cm peeling knife stood out as one of the best I have seen thanks to its slim solid metal handle and small, precise blade. Peeling knives are often a bit on the stubby side but this one feels and looks great.

Coming from the same GSF range as the peeling knife, the utility knife is another blade that you’ll probably use often. It has the same slim metal handle with a satisfying weight but its blade is wider, adding strength and the ability to cut a huge range of foods with surprising ease.

The G range cook’s/chef’s knife is exactly the kind of knife you’d expect to see in a professional kitchen and it acts like one too. With a weighted hollow handle, it’s comfortable and stable to hold and the blade is an essential length for a lot of cooking. This knife can easily handle larger sections of meat, vegetables and root vegetables.

The knife block has a very different look from the wooden blocks that many companies create. This block is smart and modern with a fairly simple design. It’s not as attractive as some knife blocks out there but it does the job in a neat way.

Pros

  • Exceptional quality – suitable for professionals and amateurs alike
  • Solid and precise peeling knife
  • Weighted and comfortable to hold

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Knife block doesn’t look fantastic

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a set of knives that are good enough for professional kitchens, then this set couldn’t be better. It contains five knives that will have you covered for the majority of occasions but not too many so you have more specialist knives than you’ll use.

Global Kitchen Knives are one of the industry leaders and it reflects in the quality and the price. If you do choose to get these knives then it will be a true investment in your kitchen and you shouldn’t have to replace them for a very long time, if ever, so you know it’s just a one off payment.
