Laser Soft Touch 5 Piece Knife Block Review

May 18, 2014 By Kitchen Kit Out Leave a Comment

Laser Soft Touch is a product range from the knife specialists Richardson Sheffield. The company has been going since 1839 and the laser technology that makes this set iconic was created in 1979. Despite being bought by a Dutch company, the British Richardson Sheffield remains wholly dedicated to creating the highest quality knives.

The Laser Soft Touch range features a laser cut serrated edge that never needs sharpening, regardless of years of wear. Another key feature of this particular range is the soft touch handle that allows constant comfort and grip that you can rely on.

The Laser Soft Touch 5 Piece Knife Block comes with:

  • Paring knife
  • All-purpose knife
  • Carving Knife
  • Bread knife
  • 15cm Cook’s knife
  • Sleek, modern black knife block

This is an essential knife set for the everyday cook and contains the fundamental five knives that anyone will need in a domestic kitchen. Because they never need sharpening and come with a fifteen year guarantee, they are solid and dependable knives made from high quality Martensitic steel.

The first thing that you notice about this set is its sleek, contemporary design. It’s modern and simple so won’t detract from your kitchen’s décor but rather adds a no-nonsense edge. The knife block itself has got a great weight to it so you can trust it to sit firmly on your worktop without the risk of it toppling over at all.

Each blade in this set is serrated so you won’t find any straight edged blades here. The blades are strong and feel trustworthy and powerful in your hand. The impressive laser technology enables them to remain very sharp despite wear so don’t try to test the sharpness with your finger!

My favourite thing about this set is actually the soft touch handles. Lots of knife sets have fantastic sharpness and a good weight but it’s the handles that really make this one stand out. If the family cat jumps out at you from its hiding place, you won’t risk dropping a knife in surprise; the comfortable handles give you a really reliable grip. The handle moulds ever so slightly to your hand, making it incredibly comfortable to hold and totally secure to cut.

All the knives in this set are good but the serrated blades to create a problem when you need to cut something with a straight blade. The exceptional sharpness does limit this requirement but serrated blades can’t handle everything you’ll need to cut, meaning you may also find yourself requiring a different knife. Depending on your needs – this could be an annoyance. The only other downside is the modern knife block; personally, it looks great but if you have a heritage styled kitchen it could look out of place.

Pros

  • Never need to be sharpened
  • 15 year guarantee
  • Fantastic soft touch feel with excellent grip

Cons

  • Knife block may not suit every kitchen
  • Only contains serrated blades

Conclusion

At such a great price, this knife block will serve you well if you’re after resilience and ease. It has the 5 essential knives for any domestic kitchen and you never need to worry about sharpening them or breaking them because they really are fantastic quality.

Without a straight edged blade, you may find foods that are awkward to cut with serrated knives but, for the most part, they should suit you just fine. Getting a set of knives from Richardson Sheffield is definitely a great decision and if you’ve got a modern styled kitchen and are a keen or even just occasional cook, you can’t go far wrong with these. Not the most beautifully sculpted utensils though, this knife set is a reliable, no-nonsense collection of plain, simple knives.
