Amazingly, Wüsthof is still a family run business and has been since 1814. The current owners, Viola and Harald Wüsthof are the seventh generation of this culinary family and the company shows no signs of slowing down or watering down its product quality. Wüsthof knives are still produced in Germany and continue to strive for absolute excellence in the knife industry. They are a globally recognised brand.
The Wüsthof Classic Knife Block set is a comprehensive knife collection that can replace your current collection or get you off to a fantastic start if you’re filling out your kitchen from new. It comes with a sturdy knife block that sits well on the work surface and even contains a pair of scissors.
The 7-Piece Wüsthof Classic Knife Block contains:
- 8cm Paring knife
- 12cm Utility knife
- 20cm Bread knife
- 23cm Sharpening steel
- 20cm Carving knife
- 20cm Cook’s knife
- Pair of kitchen shears
- Beech wood knife block
This full knife set is of exceptionally high quality and yet it would suit most people. If you’re a keen amateur cook, a professional or just somebody who likes to invest in products that are built to work and last – well this knife collection could well be exactly what you’re looking for.
Let’s start with looks for this one. The knife block itself is crafted simply but beautifully from beech wood and sits very stably on the work surface. Although it’s wooden (with a great finish), combined with the knives themselves it certainly doesn’t limit itself to traditional kitchen décor. You could just as happily admire this in a very modern kitchen. It’s also important to mention that the knives all fit flawlessly into their slots and you shouldn’t have any problem with damage caused by ill fitting or badly angled slots.
The knives themselves have a black handle with a full tang created from a single piece of high quality stainless steel. They also have a bolster and three rivets giving them a classic style and a comfortable feel and grip in the hand. Because the knife block also contains a sharpening steel and a pair of scissors, it gives off the impression of being a very neat package with everything you need in easy reach.
Now for the knives. I’m going to start with the bread knife because if there’s a bad bread knife, I’m not interested in the rest of it. Lunch, after all, is the best meal of the day. I’m not surprised that the bread in this collection is excellent but it’s always good to note. Wüsthof really haven’t let themselves down here as so many companies do. The serrated 20cm bread knife cuts easily through bread without compressing or tearing it. It’s a pleasant weight and you really don’t need to expend much energy while slicing.
The 8cm paring knife is a brilliant addition to this collection and gives you the freedom to work precisely on small items such as garlic. It’s really easy to keep a good grip and allows for fast and accurate work. The utility knife is also an important knife and I always find myself using them more than any other. This utility knife is strong, sturdy and offers for very versatile chopping.
Both the carving knife and the cook’s knife are 20cm and they’re definitely knives you want to careful with. They stay sharp after a decent amount of use and are weighted so that they feel really powerful in your hand. Both easy to use and a great shape, the cook’s knife especially will never be far from you as it’s just so useful.
The sharpening steel also has its own slot in the kitchen block and has a good sized handle to keep a proper grip while sharpening. The kitchen shears are also great quality but remember to wash them well as scissors are always harbingers of dirt, regardless of quality.
It’s highly recommended not to put these knives in the dishwasher and it’s considerably better for their health to handwash them. Be careful when washing though as they are very sharp and can cause damage to dishcloths etc. That goes for all knives really but it’s always worth mentioning!
The price for this classic knife block really shows their quality, not just their branding. They should last you for years…decades and if you look after them they shouldn’t suffer in ability.
