Richardson Sheffield V Sabatier 9-Piece Knife Block Set Review

February 22, 2014 By Kitchen Kit Out Leave a Comment

It takes impressive retail know-how and a fantastic knowledge and care over your customer base to stay in any business for over 160 years; something Richardson Sheffield have achieved somewhat effortlessly. Dedicated to knives, this British company (but now taken over by the Dutch Amefa) are easily one of the leaders in their field; providing a great variety of knife ranges.

The V Sabatier range is distinctive for its Chrome Molybdenum Vanadium carbon stainless steel blades and the benchmark of precision and performance, the Sabatier branding. With a Rockwell hardness rating of HRC 55 combined with the above specifications – you can guarantee a superior quality knife. A full tang and taper ground blade finish off the range in classic style.

The Richardson Sheffield V Sabatier 9-Piece Knife Block Set includes:

  • Paring Knife
  • All Purpose Knife
  • Vegetable Knife
  • Boning Knife
  • 20cm Cook’s Knife
  • Bread Knife
  • Carving Knife
  • Carving Fork
  • Sharpening Steel
  • Pale wood knife block

Richardson Sheffield never fail to make fantastic knives and this set is no different. It has a great variety of useful knives but the day to day household may not use all of them regularly causing some to find it excessive. If you’re a keen cook who likes to experiment though, this set has the range and quality to be worth your time. It’s professional level and it shows.

The all purpose knife is unfaultable and you’ll find yourself using it for so much. Its weight and strength allows it to handle meats and vegetables including root vegetables, with ease. The paring knife is small and handy for fruit and vegetables as well but you’ll often find the all purpose knife gets used for that too.

A bad bread knife is a deal breaker but luckily no deal has been broken here. The bread knife cuts cleanly with a sharp and serrated edge and doesn’t create the mess of bread around the edges that your old one might have. It’s a daily essential that has to be good and this one undoubtedly is.

For larger cuts of meat or whole birds there is a carving knife and an accompanying carving fork. These are useful knives although it depends how often you eat roasts as to whether they’re necessary or not. Still, even if you only have a roast at Christmas, this is still considered an essential pair and will come in handy one day.

A three rivet handle graces each knife and the construction is flawless, preventing dirt build up and allowing them to be easily hand washed as well as being dishwasher safe. They sit comfortably in the wooden block at a good angle and the block itself is secure on the counter on rubber feet.

Pros

  • Excellent, professional quality
  • Wide range of practical and useful knives
  • Stable and great looking knife block
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Expensive RRP
  • Nine knives may be excessive depending on your needs

Conclusion

This knife set ticks all the boxes if you’re an ambitious cook looking for undeniable quality and it certainly won’t leave you lacking. The quality and design also suits professional kitchens and student chefs but is not strictly necessary for the domestic kitchen. However, it’s a pleasure to use this level of expertise in an implement and it’s hard to fault.

Because of the price, it is wise to consider how much you would use these knives in the set’s entirety as Richardson Sheffield have smaller sets of equal quality. The domestic chef could happily get away with the smaller, 5-piece Richardson Sheffield V Sabatier set or the beautifully designed Richardson Sheffield Kyu Knife Block Set, also 5-piece. If it’s range you want though, it does not get better than this 9-piece.
